It was learned while in Nairobi that the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) intends to invest some major money into the planned rebranding of the Kisumu Impala Sanctuary and the Ndere Island reserve, in time to reap the fruits of the expansion and rehabilitation of the Kisumu airport, which has seen visitor numbers rise.

Kisumu has been catapulted to global fame, as the paternal home of US president Barack Obama is located near the lakeside city. Added attractions for intending visitors will add options for a touring program while at Lake Victoria. Other protected areas in western Kenya will be added to the rebranding exercise in due course, making the entire western region once again of greater interest to major tour and safari operators, who have until now cited lack of attractions and facilities as a reason why they were concentrating on selling other better-known parks.

Kisumu can be reached with ease through daily flights from Nairobi by Kenya Airways, Fly540, and Jetlink out of JKIA, while scheduled flights from Wilson Airport are operated by ALS using turboprop equipment.
