As a candidate for the title of European Capital of Culture 2025, the city of Dresden in Germany is showing what it has to offer to tourists and residents. And it is doing that with a great deal of drive. The newly-opened Children’s Museum in the Deutsches Hygiene Museum Dresden, the Dresden State Operetta in Kraftwerk Mitte Dresden, the Landesbühnen Sachsen theatre or the Long Night of the Dresden Theatres are all attracting viewers with special events and exceptional opening nights. And with its ballet premier of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” the Semperoper Dresden is preparing visitors for the really hot phase that is yet to come.

The Dresden State Operetta in Kraftwerk Mitte Dresden invites everyone to the opening night of “Zzaun! Das Nachbarschaftsmusical!” (“Ffence! A Neighbourhood Musical”) on 3 March. After a technical failure last fall had rendered the stage unusable, the Dresden State Operetta in Kraftwerk Mitte is now back up to full speed and follows up on this premier with the reopening premier of “Candide” on 17 March. Just a few minutes’ walk away from the Kraftwerk Mitte Dresden is the Carl Maria von Weber University of Music. Here one can see and hear the impressive talents of the university’s up-and-coming artists in many different events such as the jazz concert of the hfmdd jazz orchestra together with the Mittelsächsischen Philharmonic Orchestra on 16 April.

Families and children are looking forward to 23 March when the newly-renovated and newly-designed Children’s Museum in the Deutsche Hygiene Museum Dresden opens its doors. Children between the ages of four and ten will then be able to enter the “The Word of the Senses.” Here they will get a completely new perspective on their own five senses. Numerous interactive displays and various experiments will let them playfully discover how their senses work.

The Semperoper Dresden is the perfect backdrop for a really unusual night: on 11 March William Shakespeare meets Antonio Vivaldi for the premier of the ballet “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Fairy kings, queens, and enchanted lovers, wrapped up in a new interpretation of the “Four Seasons,” dance until the dream comes to an end in the dawn of a new day.

With the world premiere of “Gräfin Cosel” (“Countess Cosel”), the Landesbühnen Sachsen theatre in Radebeul is bringing the most famous mistress of the Saxon Elector Augustus the Strong to life on the stage. In this dance theatre piece, the countess looks back on her life – from her time as the official mistress of Augustus the Strong, her time at court and her banishment to Stolpen Castle where she spent the last 50 years of her life behind the castle walls (performances: 15 March and 8 April).
